Ethics is so much now and days about who gets to information first. Everything is a race to publish first just so that you don't have to deal with plagiarism issues. It is so easy to plagiarize, even if you aren't trying. In fact it is easy to plagiarize even when you are trying not to. Anyone doing research needs to be sure to record all the sources that they find so that when they write, they can cite all sources. Not plagarizing is difficult!
We have a responsibility to do whatever we can to not plagiarized as well as influence others to do the same.

Well... in terms of scientific/technological research, plagiarism may be difficult to avoid. But literary originality (as far as any literature is "original") isn't that hard.
