BYU issues

Even though some have called Brigham Young University the “Lord’s University” we’re far from perfect. Some debatable issues within the BYU community are:

Students have to pay to attend sporting events as any other spectators do. At other universities, students are not required to pay to go to sporting events. Why do we have to pay to support our school’s athletic teams?

At an institution in which academic excellence is stressed, it is interesting to note that the library has limited hours. Most college campuses have the library and its resources available for student use 24 hours a day.

As we all know, the honor code requires men to be clean-shaven. With other honor code policies, there are religious standards they help us uphold. But there is nothing in our religion that states that men shouldn’t have beards. So what’s the harm in a bit of scruff?

The last issue within our community is the lack of school spirit. Why aren’t we supporting our athletic teams? Where are our BYU t-shirts? Where is our enthusiasm and pride in the university we attend?

  1. If they ever change the rule, I am going to get one of those sweet 19th-century bare-knuckle boxer mustaches that melds into my sideburns.

  2. Although I think I understand why we have to pay to go to sporting events, it makes me wonder if your first and last issue are connected because people do not want to pay so it makes it harder for them to go to activities and then they don't get into the school spirit as much.

  3. I think the beard rule is that men will have the appearance of missionaries, who are supposed to be clean shaven.

  4. I would have to agree that is would be nice to not have to shave everyday or so... but when i was out on a mission and BYU was brought up with non members many would comment on how its known for clean looking students which is kinda cool

  5. I think Courtney hit the nail on the head in relation between school spirit and ticket prices. But also coupled that with the fact that there are some students who attend this university not because it is their campus of choice but rather they can get cheaper tuition for a high quality education. As sad as that is they really have very little enthusiasm for a school they don't care about. But i think that tends to be the minority exception rather then the majority rule.

  6. I agree that there is a relationship with the lack of school spirit and having to pay to watch sporting events. But do you think that if we didn't have to pay more people would go? Or would the same people continue to not go?

  7. I think that more people would go, especially to the football games. That would be crazy though if all the students got in for free.
